Choosing a wedding venue is an important decision. Your venue will set the tone and theme of your special day. Knowing what you are looking for will help you create a memorable experience for everyone. Here are a few tips to help you get started!
Venue Theme
Know what you want! Indoor or outdoor? Church and separate venue for reception? Venue that has everything in one space? This is YOUR big day. Make a list of what is essential for you and your partner in making day special. Hold on to this list and use it to remember what matters, especially in moments of frustration!
Wedding Budget
Once you know what you are looking for in a venue style and theme, budget should be the next major conversation. Venue typically takes 30% of your budget and typically ranges from $5,000-$10,000. Different venues will offer different amenities. Some may be “all-inclusive” and may include catering services. Others may have separate fees for catering and specific amenities.
Venue Availability
Your wedding date is next on the list as it will help determine venue availability. If you have a range of dates, or a specific date, you’ll want to start your search for a venue in plenty of time. You will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit at the time of scheduling. Make sure that you read the contract carefully before signing!
Venue Capacity
Your wedding venue will need to be able to accommodate the number of guests you plan on inviting. As a general rule, venues should have about 10-15 square feet of space per guest.
Your total budget will ultimately limit the size of your guest list. Decide whether your venue or number of guests is most important.
Indoor vs Outdoor Options
Outdoor venues offer a classy location, but the weather is always a risk. When choosing an outdoor venue, always be sure to have an indoor backup plan. Indoor venues have outdoor spaces where guests can step out and enjoy the fresh air. Make sure to ask about indoor and outdoor options, including the possibility of a tent, at the venue.
Accommodations
Out of town guests will need to know hotel accommodation options and may also need airport information. Choose a venue that will work for most of your guests.
Accessibility at the Venue
Every one of your guests will want to celebrate you! Older guests or guests with physical limitations should be considered, especially when planning seating, accessible exits, and bathrooms.
Venue Vendors
Many locations will have inclusive options, like in-house catering services and, sometimes, open bars. It is worth comparing other vendor options for things like a band and florist to be sure that you are getting prices that work best for your budget.
